Lawson, Taking Over Me

Is it a new case of Boy band meets Indie World with this catchy new single by the increasingly popular ‘Lawson’?

Well not quite… in spite of a genuine ability to perform instrumentals, they’re still very much a boy band.

It’s fair to say that Lawson aren’t going to be every Coldplay lover’s cup of tea, the market for their music clearly being considerably less matured in age.  Realistically, we can already imagine minions of high-schoolers lovingly chanting the uber-simple, uber-catchy chorus ‘Oooooooh, it’s taking over meeee!’, and catchy it is!  The boys, Adam, Andy, Ryan and Joel are appropriately easy enough on the eyes to attract more than a fair share of this target audience… no doubt they’ll benefit from the resurgence of boy-bandism being trumpeted by the currently massive One Direction.

The video itself, would not have you guessing that this was actually a British boy band, a mixture of open-top old school muscle cars, desert sunsets and Route 66 style highways will definitely transcend nicely to a US audience, and no doubt their management will want to pilfer from the lucrative combination of trendy ‘British Pop’ and en-vogue British men…. boys…. man-boys… you know!

Either way, straight in at no. 3 on the Singles charts communicates quite clearly that Lawson are establishing themselves as a BIG outfit, capable of meeting the demands that are being set upon UK boy bands at the moment. They’re ability to actually play instruments and perform as a genuine ‘live’ outfit is also somewhat a USP in a market normally dominated by vocalists (come dancers).  The funny thing about this song, is that listening to it, as an adult, you’ll know it’s not written for you, but you’ll still sing along, so in that regard, hats off, and massive congratulations to team Lawson for some great chart success!
