Aiden Grimshaw, Curtain Call – 30/07/12

For those of you unfamiliar with Aiden Grimshaw, he’s that chap from X-Factor 2010 who Dannii backed lovingly.  Kinda dark, kinda moody with renditions frequently (though not appropriately) referred to as ‘haunting’.  Back then he was the quiet (slightly creepy) dark horse, but a lot has changed since then, including his fortunes.  Riding the momentum of the recent announcement of his own headline tour, he went on to release the video for his latest forthcoming release, Curtain Call.

When we first played it, we instantly noted something Chris Martin-esque about the writing and composition… and that’s no negative comparison.  The song has all the addictiveness of an early Coldplay single, with a distinctive Aiden Grimshaw edge that makes it noticeably unique.  It’s an impressive vocal performance that really does leave you wondering if this is the same chap from X-Factor 2010 who had the nation divided over his talent.  The marmite dilemma has all but melted away (excuse the pun), as Grimshaw seems to have matured into his persona that is noticeably less manufactured, and much more genuine… this must be the ‘X’ that the judges saw in him those years back.

The songs a ballad, beautifully sung, with some outstanding support vocals from a female vocalist that is allegedly Labrinth’s sister!  We can’t corrobate the latter rumour as we found it on a Youtube comment (any more information about that will be gladly received and published).   What we can confirm is that the song will be available for download on 12th August, and we really sense some phenomenal chart performance given the huge cosigns from the likes of Record of the Day, Q and NME.  If it does top the chart it will be a deserving ascent for another X X Factorer…
